Voter Registration Rules

To register in New Jersey you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be at least 17 years of age; you may register to vote if you are at least 17 years old but cannot vote until reaching the age of 18
  • Be a resident of NJ and your county and at your address at least 30 days before the next election
  • Not be serving a sentence or on parole or probation as the result of a conviction of any indictable offense under the laws of this or another state or of the United States
  • Not be declared mentally incompetent by a court

How to Register to Vote in New Jersey

  1. Use our Register to Vote Tool below to fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
  2. Sign and date your form. This is very important!
  3. Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
  4. Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.

Voter Registration & Voting for College Students

  • College students register to vote in New Jersey by following the standard application process: every prospective voter must submit a voter registration application.
  • To register in New Jersey, you must be:
    • A United States citizen
    • At least 17 years old, though you may not vote until you have reached the age of 18
    • A resident of the county for 30 days before the election
    • You are not serving a sentence of Incarceration as a result of a conviction of an indictable offense under the laws of this or another state or of the United States.
  • If you are in college, you have the option to register from your college address or your parent's address. There are good reasons for registering and voting at either residence, but keep in mind, the final choice is yours.
  • The registration deadline to vote is 21 days prior to Election Day
  • You will receive a sample ballot about 1 week before the election that will indicate where your polling place is or you can use the polling place locator.

Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form

  • A registered voter currently affiliated with a political party who wishes to change their party affiliation must file a Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form 55 days before a Primary Election.
  • A registered voter currently not affiliated with a political party may declare their party affiliation up to and including Primary Election day.
  • You can print and complete the Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form and mail or deliver to the Commissioner of Registration in your county or you can also file it with your municipal clerk. These cards are also available at your local Commissioner of Registration Office.
  • The Commissioner of Registration cannot accept faxed copies or an electronic transmission of Party Affiliation Declaration Forms, since an original signature is required.
